‘मामा’ उपन्यास बिहार के एक क्षेत्र-विशेष, अंगिका क्षेत्र, की कहानी है, पाँच पीढ़ियों की। उपन्यास की मुख्य पात्र विद्या अपनी मामा यानी दादी माँ के साथ बिताए हुए अपने बचपन की यादों को पुनर्जीवित करती है और अपने पोते को भी उनकी कहानियाँ सुनाती रहती है।
इस उपन्यास के माध्यम से पूरी बीसवीं शताब्दी की एक तस्वीर प्रस्तुत की गई है जैसे कि अंग्रेजी काल की घटनाएं, मनुष्य के चाँद पर जाने के बारे में लोगों की सोच, पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की घटनाएँ, भंगी प्रथा, उस दौर की फिल्में और गाने, लोक गीत, और भी बहुत कुछ। उपन्यास की सजीवता को बनाए रखने के लिए उचित स्थानों पर अंगिका बातचीत को प्राथमिकता दी गई है, और हास्य -व्यंग्य का पुट भी पर्याप्त रूप से शामिल किया गया है। इसे पढ़कर पाठकों को पुरानी बातों को जानने और समझने का संयोग मिलेगा।
